Skurfing The Gap
“Surfing the Gap” is an invigorating display of exhilaration and adventure, captured by the skilled lens of Karl Monaghan. This aerial photograph teases the viewer with an exhilarating snapshot of life in the Abrolhos Islands, where the deep indigo waters are as much a playground as they are a picturesque backdrop.
The photograph perfectly captures a speed boat carving its way through the azure waters, leaving a frothy wake in its path. A daring soul is seen skurfing, a thrilling blend of surfing and wakeboarding, off the back of the boat, demonstrating the joy and excitement of water sports in the islands. The beautiful coral reefs of the Abrolhos Islands flank this scene on either side, their rich colours and textures lending a vibrant contrast to the surrounding waters.
But it’s not just the immediate action that draws you in, it’s also the overarching vista of the Easter Group of Abrolhos Islands. The islands’ isolation and unique biodiversity make them a natural sanctuary, a secret paradise that’s waiting to be discovered.
And at the heart of this paradise are deep water gaps, naturally occurring marvels that provides a path through the dense coral reef. This gap is the star of this photograph, simultaneously acting as a stage for the skurfer’s daring exploits and a window into the underwater world that thrives beneath the surface.
