The Stone Jetty Big Rat Island

Explore the mesmerizing beauty of the Easter Group of Abrolhos Islands through the lens of Karl Monaghan, a master in Australian landscape photography. His work, “The Stone Jetty – Big Rat Island,” captures a magnificent aerial view of Big Rat Island and its iconic stone jetty.

A testament to a time past, “The Stone Jetty Big Rat Island” brings to life a period of bustling industry in the isolated yet bustling Easter Group of the Houtman Abrolhos island chain. Built entirely of stone in the late 19th century, the stone jetty was once a conduit for the transport of guano—a valuable natural resource—from the island to ships for export. From 1894 until 1904, horses hauled bags in trucks along tram lines that ran the length of this very jetty, where it was then taken by lighter boats to large vessels anchored in deep water.

The Easter Group itself is a tapestry of rich history and natural beauty. Discovered and named in April 1840 by the crew of HMS Beagle, this group of islands is a haven for a large number of breeding seabirds, making it an important ecological area. Among the islands in the group is Big Rat Island, with its stone jetty standing as a silent witness to the industry of yesteryears. The group’s name and the harbor, Good Friday Harbor, were chosen to commemorate the Christian season during which the islands were discovered.

This print is more than just an aerial photograph—it’s a glimpse into the past, a slice of history, and a testament to nature’s endurance. It’s perfect for those who appreciate the intertwining of history, industry, and natural beauty.
